La città delle donne

In 1980 Andrea Pazienza was asked to create the promotional poster for the international launch of the film La città delle donne by Federico Fellini, which had just been released in Italian cinemas and shown out of competition at the Cannes Film Festival. Pazienza worked on several drafts, but none seemed to fully satisfy either him or the client. Inspiration came unexpectedly while he was on a bus in Bologna, by then determined to drop the project: «I was ready to drop everything, partly because I was wasting time. Then I turned around and saw a girl with the sun shining on her nose and mouth but leaving her eyes in shadow. It was a raking sun; she was a dark-haired girl; I added an earring». That is how Paz’s famous “woman with the earring” was born, which would become the iconic image of the worldwide campaign run by the production company Gaumont.
About this work, Pazienza remarked ironically: «I agree with Fellini when he says it looks like a hairdresser’s poster». He would devote two pages of La Prolisseideto his meeting with the director and to the genesis of the poster, published in the satirical periodical Zut in 1987.
