“I find it much easier to draw empty pages than pages full of dialogue, because it requires the character to act out what he’s saying, something I learned at Male: the face of whoever is speaking, in the back-and-forth, has to follow the expression of the whole dialogue, supporting both the opening line and the final punchline, because there is also a mathematics to reading certain things. Of course in a small cartoon everything is very compressed, it’s hard, whereas free pages are pure drawing and off you go.”
