Zanardi

“Of Zanardi I can say that he’s the only child of a father who isn’t rich, but well-off, which allows him to have the black 1600 diesel Golf. Zanardi’s main characteristic is emptiness. The absolute emptiness that permeates every action. Basically Zanardi represents what I hated most in the behavior of someone I knew in my childhood.”

Andrea Pazienza

What could be less educational, more ruthless and abject than the stories of this comics genius? The cruel adventures of Zanardi and his pals, the squalid situations steeped in sex, violence and drugs, raise a fence that no one preaching honesty and tolerance, serenity and moderation can cross. And only the perfection of the line, the articulation of the scenes, the magnificent lettering and the acrobatic skill in using technical means manage to overcome the horror of certain episodes that at times seem autobiographical.

Fulco Pratesi, from the introduction to Andrea Pazienza. Bestiario, 1992
